Best Grasses
What grows in Zone 3b.
Kentucky Bluegrass
KBG
Dominant cool-season turf for this zone. Choose elite cultivars from NTEP top-25 (Midnight, Bewitched, Mazama) for density and color.
Best for: Primary full-sun turf
Fine Fescue Blend (creeping red, hard, chewings)
Fine Fescue
Best cool-season shade tolerance. Pairs with KBG in mixed-light lawns.
Best for: Shade, low-input, mixed lawns
Turf-Type Tall Fescue (cold-hardy cultivars)
TTTF
Modern cold-hardy TTTF (Falcon V, Rebel IV) survives Zone 3b but isn't as bulletproof as KBG. Useful where KBG struggles in heavier soils.
Best for: Heavy clay soils, drought tolerance
Perennial Ryegrass (Manhattan-series)
PRG
Quick germination — useful as a 10–20% nurse component in KBG seed blends. Choose only NTEP-proven cold-hardy cultivars.
Best for: Nurse crop, quick repair

Lawn Calendar
Year-round timing for Zone 3b.
Spring
- ·Late May: rake winter damage and overseed thin spots (KBG primary, PRG nurse)
- ·First mow when grass reaches 4 inches; cut to 3 inches
- ·Apply 0.5–0.75 lb N/1000 sqft around late May–early June
- ·Pre-emergent crabgrass at soil temp 55°F (late May)
Summer
- ·Mow at 3–3.5 inches
- ·1" water per week including rain; deep + infrequent
- ·Hold fertilizer in July–August on non-irrigated lawns
- ·Brown patch is rare here — focus on watering discipline
Fall
- ·Primary overseeding: Aug 20 – Sep 15 (soil temps 60–70°F)
- ·Most important fert of the year: 1 lb N/1000 sqft in late August
- ·Aerate compacted areas before overseed
- ·Final mow at 2.5 inches by mid-October
Winter
- ·Lawn dormant under snow
- ·Avoid traffic on frozen turf — crown damage is permanent
- ·Plan spring purchases in February
Watch For
Common Zone 3b problems.
Snow mold under prolonged snowpack
Mow to 2.5 inches on final cut. Avoid late-October nitrogen. Spring rake to break up matted areas; KBG recovers via rhizomes.
Ice sheets killing crowns
Where ice persists >30 days on unfrozen turf, expect dieback. Mark damaged areas in spring and overseed once soil hits 55°F.
Spring leaf spot (Drechslera)
Mow at proper height (3 inches) and avoid spring nitrogen excess. Resistant KBG cultivars handle this well.
Crabgrass after late spring
Pre-emergent timing is tight: late May when soil reaches 55°F at 4-inch depth. Forsythia bloom is the indicator.
